Rainy Fall Bloom, Leaves, and Fungi November 8, 2014

A week of rain and cold is significantly reducing the flowers in my garden.
Today I am linking with-

Saturday's Critters hosted by Eileen

Today's Flowers hosted by Denise

Macro Monday 2 hosted by Gemma and Mystical Magical Teacher

I Heart Macro hosted by Laura

But the winter-blooming Camellia sasanqua 'Apple Blossom' surprises with an occasional bloom-

Also still blooming, Polygonum capitata-

Fall color is progressing here, Aronia in its glory, a yellow mulberry tree to the left-

Blueberries can have pretty fall color-

The rains have given new life to the fungi, many mushrooms springing up as a result-

And a more delicate white one-

Critters of the week- my ducks.  They are troupers, they outlay chickens and stick out the weather no matter how bad it gets.   They are in a movable run.

It is frustrating trying to take them in their run so I brought one in the house-

A little critter humor

The bats with their funny little wings make me think of a song I like to listen to when gardening, about  flying away like the bats.

    1. Thanks, Gunilla, it's such a treat to find blooms on the Camellia. I'm still looking for one distinctive mushroom I saw last year that I found out is edible, so far without success.

  2. Hannah, your camellia photo would grace any calendar or card perfectly, truly beautiful with those raindrops, or dewdrops, and Willie Nelson, I could listen to country music like that all day.I'm sure your winter coldness is nearly there, keep warm. Jean.

    1. Thanks, Jean, the Camellia has lots of buds so I can keep enjoying them. I the country sound of Willie Nelson's voice, but especially his guitar playing. It can stay pretty warm here in the winter as long as it is raining. But we can get some pretty good lows where I live at a little higher altitude, than a few miles away.

  6. It's just my laundry room, Margaret! So funny. She was very well behaved, actually. I find the bats so cute, more darling than I would have imagined bats could be. Winged warriors, I appreciate their consumption of mosquitos.

  7. I think the way in which mushroom just 'appear' overnight is remarkable - always a sure sign of autumn here - they tend to pop up around the base of our raised vegetable beds - I think it may be because water runs down the outside of the bed (they are made of corrugated metal) and keeps a small ring of soil a little damper than other areas. Well maybe!

    1. Thanks, Stewart, it is amazing to me how so many mushrooms start popping up. If only I could get edible ones to do that. I have tried a little with starter plugs but was unsuccessful in keeping them properly damp, apparently.

    1. I wish I could eat them. There is one I found last year that is distinctive and edible, I haven't found it again this year. Your Virginia fall color is amazing, far beyond anything I see here.

    1. Thanks, Mari, it didn't work very well since the cabinets are the same color. I will have to try something else. I was trying my new camera but I haven't learned how to use it well enough yet, I was not happy with the detail. It's great to have the rain but the cold is hard on most flowers, but the Camellia sasanqua's like to bloom in the winter.;-)

  12. Yes, it's great to be getting some rain. It's strange how I start sleeping better in the fall. I love duck eggs, they are bigger and more succulent than those runny little chicken eggs, the whites are firmer and whiter, like crystal.

    1. Thanks, Carol. I love the ducks but they are not very friendly. My grandkids play with their chickens so much that they are quite tame, I guess I needed them when the ducklings were little.

  19. So mushrooms can be at anywhere.

They must have facebook in order to know each other.

    1. Ha ha, so true. Those fungi are mighty mysterious. Growing and growing under the ground, then suddenly bursting forth with all their mushrooms. At least the bracket fungi are more upfront. The local Turkeytails can be made into tea, like Reishi mushrooms, another health-packed bracket mushroom. Gathering mushrooms in the wild is not something I have learned about.

  25. I always love when the mushrooms start popping up. So many forms and colors. Looks like you have some lovely fall foliage, too. Do duck eggs taste different from chicken eggs?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks, Evan, I'm still waiting for the edible mushroom to pop up. I love duck eggs, the whites are crystal white and firmer, the chicken whites are yellowish and runny. The yolks are bigger and oranger, but that is true of all free-range eggs. To me they are more succulent, but taste the same. My son and daughter think they taste gamey, I don't even know what that means. They are also bigger, and ducks are more consistent layers.

    1. Thanks, the ducks are not as beautiful as many of the wild ducks but cannot fly and have good dispositions. They are not as noisy as chickens and don't tear up the ground as much either, though they like to stick their bills into wet mud looking for worms.

  28. Hello,Hannah,
Love to see your fall color progressing! Here in my area, fall foliage will be peak soon. The red leaves of blueberries are beautiful! You harvest the fruits from your blueberry tree? I like blueberry jam very much. Your pink flower with drops is lovely and the white mushroom is so beautiful. It looks like an elegant parasol.
Thank you for your lovely visit.
Have a good weekend, from Japan.
