I'm looking at some plant selections that I'm using in a bed by my driveway, it has some Lamb's Ears, for a nice silvery look,
and a few Echinacea plants, no longer blooming, from August, I am hoping for a bigger clump of them eventually-
Pink Panda strawberries make a random ground cover, they started blooming after some rain, and are blooming now-
I'm edging the bed with creeping Thyme, no longer blooming-
The back of the bed has 3 Spirea shrubs, they are favorites of mine since deer don't seem to bother them and they have been great at blooming every spring, no longer blooming-
Spirea 'Pink Ice' has frosty looking variegated leaves.
In another bed is my 16 year old Spirea Little Princess when blooming in spring-
I also have a native Spirea douglasii in another place, which has grown quite large and is covered in with long purple cones of flowers in summer-
In addition the driveway bed has 3 Sedums- a NOID variegated one,
and two Sedum Sunsparklers with darker leaves, no longer blooming- 'Jade Tuffet'-
and Cherry Tart-
They looked great in the nursery but the multitude of branches turned out to rather weak and tended to break off, so they are not as impressive in the ground, but hopefully they will do better when they grow next year.
Sedum spectabiles have been very reliable for me, these are totally untended and bloom every year in a bank by the driveway that is overrun with Lady's Mantle which suppresses all the weeds.
A new shrub that will take a few years to look like much is a burning bush, Euonymous alatus-
Even though it is small it managed to bloom, though I didn't see the flowers, but the seeds are hanging on-
My Dahlias finally started to bloom, so I'm using them for my In a Vase on Monday post. These are currently blooming fall flowers, hopefully they will be able to keep blooming for a nice long season. I'm enjoying taking Cathy's challenge to find something growing in my garden to put in a vase to decorate my home. The other flowers are Ageratum 'Dondo Blue', and I also used ribbon grass-
One flower had a very short stem so I tried it with a ceramic pot with similar colors-
Fall weather has been mostly very nice, and we are getting some appreciated rain now. What fall bloomers do you like? Hannah
I also tried out one dahlia in a vase with some Elaeagnus 'Gilt Edge' to bring out the yellow in the flowers, it is blooming now and wafting a sweet vanilla fragrance in the garden

ReplyDeleteI showed several flowers that bloomed in summer or spring, the Pink Panda flowers and the lovely Dahlias and Ageratum are still blooming now. I had to wait a long time for the Dahlias this year, they will probably keep going until frost and have a lot of buds!

DeleteEchinacea and lamb's ears are two of my favorites! And that cherry tart sedum is just lovely! Always enjoy your flowers.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Marie, I wish Echinacea did better for me, I would like to have blocks of it growing, I guess I'll just have to start some more and hope they do well.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Gunilla, The Lamb's Ears have been around a long time, and I also have the dwarf version, which I think spreads better. I'm so happy the dahlias are finally blooming.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Gemma, I struggle along with the weeds, drought, and so forth so having some plants that return for me year after year is such a pleasure. And it's fun to play with arranging them, too.

ReplyDeleteYes, it should be quite pink in the spring, Cathy. I was supposed to go look at more Dahlias Saturday but didn't make it, but there is always online.
DeleteI like the color of your dahlia. Pairing it with the Ageratum brings out the blue nicely.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Susie, it has such subtle shades of yellow and pink. The Ageratum was blooming so nicely right by it so I thought why not?
DeleteEach time you use a different vase for the same flower, it brings a new dimension. Love the first arrangement, the green vase and the grass could form the basis of so many with other flowers too.

DeleteI never realized how many different Spireas there are and the great flower colors. Love the dahlia in the little cup.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda, once I realized how great my pink Spirea was doing after many years I decided to start collecting them. I've never seen any deer damage on them. I was excited to see how well the glaze on the little pot matched the dahlia color.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Donna, the trees are dropping leaves here but not much color yet, I'm looking forward to when the burning bush will look more like a ball of fire. I'm thankful for the dahlias, they will bloom until frost now.

DeleteThat's a lovely Dahlia, Hannah. It looks great with the foliage you used (not that it isn't also pretty on its own). Summer seems to be hanging on here so I'm not sure I can speak to fall bloomers. So far, the only ones flowering are Plectranthus 'Zulu Warrior' and Pennisetum 'Rubrum'.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kris, I'm so happy to have dahlias again. I googled Plectranthus Zulu Warrior and your photos came up, they made a lovely vase. I wonder if they bloom as a houseplant. They are a far cry from the Swedish Ivy I used to grow. I tried one Plectranthus and my infrequent watering had it wilting most of the time.
